Housing Minister Wimal Weerawansa says that the Geological Survey and Mines Bureau (GSMB) should conduct a comprehensive study on the recovery of gold particles from the Kelani River.
Addressing a public gathering after the handing over of ‘Thisarapura’ housing scheme over the weekend, Minister Weerawansa said that soon after the discovery of gold fragments, the GSMP had issued licences to those interested in prospecting for gold.
But the GSMP should have launched a search of its own, he said, faulting the institution for failing in its duty. The GSMP should have acted responsibly in line with its duties and responsibilities, the National Freedom Front (NFF) leader said.
Commenting on Western powers calling for sharp decrease of armed forces’ presence in the Northern and Eastern Provinces, Minister Weerawansa alleged that the government should closely watch the ongoing campaign. The Colombo District MP pointed out that the US, UK and the TNA had been spearheading the campaign since the conclusion of the conflict in May 2009. The MP alleged that Western powers and those who once categorized the LTTE as the sole representatives of the Tamil speaking people were now campaigning at the behest of the LTTE rump. The weakening of the armed forces presence would facilitate ongoing attempts to revive separatist sentiments, though the LTTE no longer retained a conventional military capability.
The MP alleged that the US was working overtime to destabilize the country. Appreciating President Rajapaksa’s vow not to succumb to external pressure, the Minister said that the country could be proud of the rapid progress in resettlement and rehabilitation of war-affected communities. The resettlement was going apace with de-mining operations reaching a critical stage.
