Places to Visit in Trincomalee

If you are visiting the east coast of Sri Lanka Trincomalee is a must visit town. Because of the war it wasn’t accessible for many years, but after the war it has become one of the most visited places in Sri Lanka. The tourist industry is booming and hotels and resorts are coming up at a rapid rate. The reconstruction of the road to Trincomalee and the introduction of the sea plane service made the town even more accessible. Nilaveli Beach

Naval Base Tour

One of the lesser known places to visit in Trincomalee. You don’t need know a officer in the forces etc. although that do help a bit. You can arrange this tour by filling a form and paying a reasonable amount. The tour includes a visit to the Naval museum, coral drove beach, Elephant point and finally a boat ride in the Trincomalee bay. A great experience especially if you are interested in the war and it’s history.

Koneswaram Hindu Kovil

Koneswaram Hindu Kovil in TrincomaleeKoneswaram kovil is situated on top of the Swami Rock and offers a brilliant view of the surrounding sea. If you manage to visit there early in the morning you can capture some brilliant photos of the sunrise. If it’s not a crowded day like a weekday you can go near the kovil from a vehicle. There are some brilliantly colored statues and carvings at the kovil. The sea below has brilliant blu color which is rarely seeing anywhere in the world. Just before the entrance you can see the “Lovers Leap”. As the name suggest it became famous because some couple jumped from it to commit suicide.

Fort Fedrick

Built by the Portugeuse, it is sometime known as the Trincomalee fort as well. You need to go through here to reach the Koneswaram kovil so take the time to look around the fort. You can see the remains of some old guns and administrative buildings, Somewhat similar to Galle fort but far smaller.

Kanniya Hot Water Wells

Kanniya Hot Water Wells near TrincomaleeSituated about 29Km from Trincomalee, Kanniya has seven wells built on top of springs. Although all seven wells are situated in a 10 square meter area the water temperature in each well is different. If it’s a public holiday its a good idea to get there early because otherwise the water in the wells will dry up quickly.

Pigeon Island National Park

Pigeon Island - One of the top places to visit in TrincomaleeThe second marine sanctuary in Sri Lanka. Pigeon island is a short distance from the Nilaveli beach and one of the best places to go snorkeling. If you are not that adventurous you can just visit the island and have stroll. Marble Beach

Marble Beach, China Bay TrincomaleeAnother famous beach in Sri Lanka. This is situated near the China Bay Air Force camp. If the sea is not rough you can sea the surface shining like a marble. The beach is maintained by the Air Force and it has a nice restaurant for you to enjoy a meal.
