If you are visiting the east coast of Sri Lanka Trincomalee is a must visit town. Because of the war it wasn’t accessible for many years, but after the war it has become one of the most visited places in Sri Lanka. Koneswaram kovil is situated on top of the Swami Rock and offers a brilliant view of the surrounding sea. If you manage to visit there early in the morning you can capture some brilliant photos of the sunrise. If it’s not a crowded day like a weekday you can go near the kovil from a vehicle. There are some brilliantly colored statues and carvings at the kovil. The sea below has brilliant blu color which is rarely seeing anywhere in the world. Just before the entrance you can see the “Lovers Leap”. As the name suggest it became famous because some couple jumped from it to commit suicide.
Situated about 29Km from Trincomalee, Kanniya has seven wells built on top of springs. Although all seven wells are situated in a 10 square meter area the water temperature in each well is different. If it’s a public holiday its a good idea to get there early because otherwise the water in the wells will dry up quickly.
The second marine sanctuary in Sri Lanka. Pigeon island is a short distance from the Nilaveli beach and one of the best places to go snorkeling. If you are not that adventurous you can just visit the island and have stroll. There are boat services available from the Nilaveli beach. Built by the Portugeuse, it is sometime known as the Trincomalee fort as well. You need to go through here to reach the Koneswaram kovil so take the time to look around the fort.
