Traffic plans for May Day

Police said today that a special traffic plan will be put into operation on May 01, in view of the large number of parades and rallies organized in the country celebrating International Workers’ Day.

It has been reported that 3 ‘May Day’ rallies and 5 parades are to be held in the city of Colombo.

The Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) parade from Campbell Park, the National Freedom Front (NFF) parade from Ayurvedic Roundabout and the Mahajana Eksath Peramuna (MEP) parade from near Narahenpita Abayaramaya Temple will travel towards the Colombo Municipality grounds, where the May Rally of the United People’s Freedom Alliance (UPFA) is being held.

Therefore the Baseline Road (Dematagoda Junction to Borella Junction and Cemetery Junction to Mahawatta Junction), Maradana Road (Borella to Maradana Junction), Deans Road-Kannangara Mawatha, Ward Place- Lipton Circus Roundabout, Ayurvedic Roundabout-Castle Street and Cemetery Road- Thimbirigasyaya Road will either be completely closed or vehicle travel restricted from 12noon onwards on May 01, police said.

The Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) parade will travel from Saranankara Road to BRC Ground, where their May Rally is being held. Police said that Saranankara Road-Pamankada Road, Stafford Avenue and High Level Road (Kirulapana to Dickmans Road) will be closed from 12 noon due to the parade.

The commemoration of Late President R. Premadasa will be held near his Memorial Statue in Hulftsdorp (Aluth Kade) while the parade will begin from near Sugathadasa Stadium. Therefore Sirimavo Bandaranaike Mawath, Jethawana Road, Armour Barber Junctio, Sumanatissa Mawatha, Sangaraja Roundabout, Sangaraja Mawatha, Technical College Junction, Mihindu Mawatha and Court Road will be closed from 12 noon.

The United National Party (UNP) and Tamil National Alliance (TNA) rally is to be held at Gurunagar, Jaffna while the Eelam People’s Democratic Party (EPDP) May Day Rally will be held at Jaffna Municipal Grounds.

 Due to their rallies and parades the A9 Road from Arukku Junction will either be closed or traffic will be restricted from 12.30 pm onwards, police said. (AdaDerana)
